As I sit in a cozy coffee shop (thanks, Black Cat Coffee), my husband Ben is at this ski site, enjoying a break from blizzards. This is a public golf course just north of Portland, Maine. More people seem to use and enjoy this place during winter than in the summertime. It even has a small building for food and hot chocolate, and is a fantastic place to spend a winter's day skiing or inner tubing. This painting is of my friend Gail Donovan, a wonderful children's book author, and that's my husband behind her.
As I've written before, it was a show of Jessica Lee Ives' paintings that inspired me to start painting more of the many outdoor activities we do here in Maine. Rather than just pure landscapes, I started including figures as we swam, hiked, skied, tobogganed, sailed, and in many ways enjoyed the beauty of each place. I love responding to the blissful landscapes I see by painting them. But I also love showing how we can be in those landscapes, enjoying this world - even in winter!
