Today's deluge resulted in some spectacular images of flooding in downtown Portland, Maine, where I live. At work I was in a different kind of storm, working with high school students who try hard to find their way through challenges to meet their goals. At the end of each day I come home and decompress. Some days that means walking my dog (who turns 13 tomorrow) and taking in the amazing beauty of this city. Other days I sit at my easel and try to create a scene that reflects the beauty that surrounds us each day. And while I paint, I try to remember to breathe. Eventually everything else falls away, and I am left with the paint and the image, working to find a way through challenges to meet my goal of creating a good painting.
